China, as a driving force for world economic development, increasingly impacts the global economy. In-depth, professional business reporting is becoming essential in China. There is a need for more sophisticated coverage by international media of financial markets, international business and trade, business management and infrastructure, personnel issues and financial performance. China’s business journalism needs to move to the next level in the complex world of global finance. Business journalism in China needs the kind of professional training in business reporting to cover Chinese and international companies as they engage in mergers and acquisitions, issue debt and hedge risks in global capital markets.
China’s continued economic growth attracts more and more investment from multinationals, which are establishing representative offices or companies across the country. Multinational corporations in China need public relations officers who can write newsworthy press releases, act as a professional spokesperson and cope with reporters from domestic and international media.
The fully English taught MA in Global Business Journalism is designed to meet the above need. The program will offer international students the opportunity to enhance their understanding and knowledge of business, economics and finance in China. The courses offered will respond to a growing public interest in business and economic news and to an increasing demand for trained editors and reporters to cover the field.
The Tsinghua GBJ-MA is new and already recognized by students and recruiters alike as a world-class programme. As such, we accept only the most talented individuals from around the globe, creating a class which is truly international, as well as culturally and professionally diverse. The 2-year, full-time programme is intense, fast-moving, and rewarding. You will emerge with new opportunities before you, new connections and networks, and a new outlook on your career. It is two-year programme that will last you a lifetime.
The programme aims at bringing business journalism in China in line with the top international reporting standards. TSJC has a long history of cooperation with and has close contacts with major international media and financial corporations such as BusinessWeek, Bloomberg, Reuters, Financial Times, the Washington Post, the New York Times, CNN and others.
For the programme, the School of Journalism and Communication will, in collaboration with such international journalism educational organizations such as the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the Knight Fellowship and the National Press Foundation offer a range of courses including a comparative analysis of the financial statements of Chinese and Western companies, an examination of conflicts of interest and how they can hobble firms, and insights into complex financial instruments such as derivatives.
The goal is to create a cadre of top-notch business reporters and editors, who can produce clear, balanced and intelligent coverage of Chinese and global companies, and media savvy corporate public relations officers.
The programme will also take full advantage of Tsinghua’s prestigious School of Economics and Management, so students will have a deep understanding of the overall global economy and the ability to tackle complicated economic and business issues. |
